What is a Mummichog?
Mummichog
Fundulus heteroclitus
 |
A mummichog is a chubby
little fish with a rounded nose and a stout body. A resident of
tidal creeks and wetlands. A natural means of mosquito control,
one mummichog can eat a couple of thousand mosquito larvae per day.
Reportedly, mummichog population has the greatest numbers of all
the fish species on the eastern seaboard. It's Indian name means,
"They go in great numbers."
In some areas subspecies have been able to adapt to very polluted
waters. They are now being studied for their ability to survive
in very bad conditions. Often seen at the edge of marches as the
tide recedes, they are the favorite choice of seventh grade marine
field trips. All of their life is spent within a couple of thousand
yards of where they were hatched.
